This year, we started off the day by cheering at our local 4th of July parade. We love our little town of 3400 people. The parade consisted of a police car, a couple fire trucks- not the big ones, the small ones- a bunch of kids on bikes, some motorcycles, and the American Legion- who weren't even from Oak Point, we had to borrow them from Little Elm. It was so funny. The parade was so short that it doubled back around so that the parade watchers could get their wait's worth. I make fun, but I really did enjoy it. This type of small town atmosphere is just what we were looking for. After the parade we walked over to the park for hot dogs and brisket sandwiches. In my opinion, it's not the 4th without some brisket. Mmmm!
After a nap at home we headed to Fair Park. All of the museums had free admission, so it was cool that we got to go to all those places without paying the high price for tickets. Unfortunately, it was pretty crowded, so we didn't get to fully enjoy everything they had to offer. Oh! But we did find out at the Children's Museum that there are 14 species of tarantulas indigenous to Texas. I'm afraid our little friend was not somebody's pet.
Due to the 103 degree heat, we didn't stay long enough to watch the fireworks from inside the Cotton Bowl, but we did watch them from the interstate on the way home. Shelby loved them. She kept yelling, "Fireworks! Fireworks! Fireworks!", over and over again. And then she would say, "Fireworks go boom! Fireworks so pretty!". She was definitely born into the right family!
The cool thing about Dallas is that on the drive home, you could look out in any direction and see all the other cities in the Metroplex putting on their shows. It was pretty neat. Shelby was so exhausted by the time we got home that she was out, literally the second her head hit the pillow. It was a pretty good day. Here are a few pictures:
