Positive Nelly

I am trying to get out of the funk I have been in and start my week off on a positive note and do away with Negative Nelly for good.

After two days of eye drops, I can already see a vast improvement in our eyes. Shelby's eyes are only slightly goopy when she wakes up, and not at all goopy during the day. My eyes are not near as red as yesterday, and I didn't have the constant burning and itching that I had yesterday. Woohoo!

I enjoy cooking, and it usually puts me in a good mood, so after a much needed afternoon nap, I rolled out of bed to figure out what to make for dinner. The times when I enjoy cooking the most are when I play "pantry surprise". This is when you have no set meal planned and have to try to come up with something with what you've got. Since I had not planned ahead and thawed out any chicken or ground beef, I decided it was going to be a vegetarian meal: salad and roasted vegetable soup. I usually take the Rachael Ray approach and don't measure anything, so I can't really tell you exactly how I made the soup, but here is what I did:
-Gathered any vegetables I had in the fridge that needed to be used- celery, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots- plus an onion and garlic from the pantry.
-Rough chop everything, then put in a roasting pan. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cook at 450 for about 30-40 minutes.
-This might seem weird. I had a box of au gratin potatoes in the pantry. So while the veggies were roasting, I took the dehydrated potatoes and boiled them til tender.
-When all the veggies were cooked, I put them in the blender and pureed them. I put everything in a soup pot and added probably 1 cup of milk and 4 cups of chicken broth.
-Then I added the seasoning packet from the au gratin potatoes, and two big handfuls of cheese.

I was pretty pleased with the result of the soup. Jeremy said he would take some for lunch tomorrow, so it must have been ok. That or he didn't want Negative Nelly to resurface. :)

For dessert I made Rocky Road cake. I am not usually a Rocky Road fan, but we had chocolate icing, so I was just trying to do what I could with it. It actually came out pretty tasty.

To top it all off, I was just pretty entertained by the Russian ice dancing team. This week is bound to be good.

Wah, Wah, Wah

This is how I have felt the past week and a half:

I cannot even explain the levels of frustration I reached today. I ended up calling my mom and broke down and cried. I felt like a moron for getting so upset about everything. This is what drove me to the meltdown:

1) Shelby caught a stomach virus, therefore I caught a stomach virus.
2) Shelby caught a cold, therefore I caught a cold.
3) Shelby caught pink eye, therefore I caught pink eye.
4) I am 8 months pregnant, and the slightest chasing after Shelby brings on Braxton Hicks contractions. That wouldn't be so bad except that I am afraid it will start bring on actual contractions like I had last Wednesday.
5) Scout camp outs. Don't get me wrong, I support Jeremy in his calling, but there are some things about these camp outs that annoy me.
a) They go once a month. That might be normal, I don't know. But, I work full time AND watch Shelby all day. Friday nights and Saturdays are my time to relax. I don't care if that sounds selfish of me. I think some of the dads need to get more involved with the Scouts anyway. If they can't go, then they shouldn't have the camp outs as often. They can do merit badges another time.
b) These camp outs are over an hour away at a place where there is no cell phone coverage.
c) I never know when on Saturday Jeremy is going to get home. I think it is a Mom survival thing to need to know when her husband will be home so he can take a turn and give her a break. Like during the week, I know Jeremy will be home around 5:15, so I mentally prepare myself saying, "Ok, you just have to make it til 5:15 and that's it".
d) The fact Jeremy doesn't understand my frustrations with all this, and I just come off to him as the witchy wife.
6) I did not sleep well at all last night. I got to bed late because our ghetto neighbors were coming and going all night, bumping their music so loudly that it sounded like someone was banging on the wall. Then when I did get to sleep, Shelby was either on top of me or had her feet in my back. I finally got up at 6 because my eyes were itching and burning so badly anyway.
7) Another neighbor, the guy behind us, decided to mow his lawn for THREE hours today. THREE HOURS! He was on a riding mower! I swear he was just bored and riding it for fun. It was so loud though that I could not get Shelby down for a nap, therefore I couldn't take a nap.

It was at this point that I called my mom. I know I sounded like a crazy, hormonal pregnant person. I don't care. I had reached my breaking point. I am still pretty annoyed, but have cooled off slightly, taking comfort in the fact that Jeremy is teaching my lesson tomorrow so I don't have to worry about that.

Angry Rant

Ok, so it started out with Shelby throwing up at 5:15 am Wednesday morning. She didn't throw up again til yesterday, but she threw up four times. Then she was fine all day today (she never has had a fever with any of this), so we decided to go to an early Valentine's Day dinner. Thankfully, I had the foresight to grab some Wal-Mart bags and put them in the diaper bag just in case. We get inside On The Border and are waiting to be seated when Shelby starts dry heaving. We grab a Wal-Mart bag, which caught most of it, but a lot of it still covered Shelby AND ME. We then got to drive 20 minutes home with the lovely smell of vomited up eggs and toast.

The reason I am mad is that Shelby had to have gotten sick from either someone in nursery or someone at Going Bonkers last Saturday. PARENTS - KEEP YOUR KIDS AT HOME IF THEY ARE SICK! So annoying! When we were at Going Bonkers, the place was PACKED. There were no tables or chairs left, it was pretty much standing room only. We had managed to find a single chair at a table so I could sit down while Jeremy took Shelby to play. This couple comes over, right next to the table, pulls out a changing pad, and changes their baby's diaper right there. Then the mom takes the baby and goes back to play, without washing or at least Purrell-ing her hands first. I am usually not a prude when it comes to nursing or changing diapers, but in this case, I thought it was totally uncalled for. There was a bathroom with two changing stations literally 10 feet away from us. And then to not wash her hands afterwards. And I can't even tell you how many sick kids I see at church all the time.

So I am a little mad because it is not fun to watch your child be sick.

*UPDATE - 2/17/10 - So another reason I get mad when Shelby gets sick from other people is that since I am usually the one to catch her vomit, I am the one that will inevitably get the illness as well. And sure enough, I did. I lost 3 pounds yesterday. Not necessarily the best thing for someone 31 weeks pregnant.

What a week!

It started off great with the Saints winning the Superbowl. So awesome! Just wish we could have been at the parade on Tuesday night. That would have been so fun!

I was woken up yesterday morning by the sound of Shelby, who was in the bed next to me, throwing up. Awesome. Nothing worse than a child throwing up because they are just so helpless. Shelby was a trooper though. In fact, she was bright and bubbly after we gave her a bath and got her all cleaned up. That is, until later that afternoon. I put her down for a nap around noon, and twenty minutes later she woke up screaming and crying, pulling at her ear, and telling me that her "ear wasn't working". This child never complains about things like that, so I quickly made an appointment for the doctor. Turns out she only had the very, VERY early stages of an ear infection. She did have a very red throat and the doctor said she was probably hurting more from that than anything.

Later last night, Jeremy was at church, Shelby had fallen asleep on the couch, and I was taking a moment to rest in bed while watching American Idol. I heard Shelby wake up, so I got up and took her to the bathroom. I started cleaning up the kitchen, doing the dishes, etc. when I started to get this pain in my back. Kind of felt like a really bad pulled muscle. It went away after about 30 seconds, but then it happened again a minute or two later. The pain quickly intensified to the point where when it happened every couple of minutes, I was paralyzed. It felt like someone was doing an Indian rug burn on my spine, and the pain would radiate to the front. Jeremy came home a few minutes later to find me crying on the floor, and Shelby crying in the living room because she was freaked out. After a few more minutes of these contractions, he called my doctor who then sent us to the hospital.

By the time I got there, the contractions had mostly stopped, and were only showing up on the monitor as minor "irritations". Of course! Not that I wanted the contractions to continue, but I hate the thought of the nurses thinking I am one of THOSE people. Trust me, Jeremy saw me, my doctor and my mom heard me on the phone, Shelby freaked out...I was in pain. When I had Shelby, I was induced. My contractions started almost immediately after they started the first round of Cytotec so they quickly gave me some medicine to help me sleep. I really only felt maybe 5 or 6 contractions. The contractions I had last night were nothing like that. These started in my back and went to the front. And then there was tons and tons of pressure in front. All tests came back fine, and other than a really sore back today, I am fine. One cute thing I wanted to note is that at the hospital, Shelby was laying in the bed with me and pointed around the room and asked where we were. I told her we were in the hospital and she said, "But then where's Joey?". Then, on the way out, we walked by the nurses station and the nurse that had been helping me said goodbye. Shelby looked up, waved and blew her a kiss, and then said, "Bye! Thank you! And thank you for my mommy!". Too cute!

This morning we woke up to a winter wonderland. We had record snow here in Dallas. I kept looking out the window all day long expecting to see that the snow had stopped, but even just now, when I looked out (it is 11:15 pm) it was still snowing! We had about 8 inches of snow, maybe more at this point. Shelby was SO excited when Jeremy finally got home and she got to play in the snow. His office is closed tomorrow because of it, so hopefully they can play in it a little more before it all melts.

Tomorrow we are leaving to go to Bastrop to celebrate Papaw's 85th birthday. Shelby is so excited to see everyone. She loves visiting family, and that's all she's been talking about all week. Hopefully we'll have lots of pictures to share on Sunday!

WHO DAT?!

I can't remember who won the Superbowl for any other year, but I will always remember who won the Superbowl on February 7, 2010! I didn't take very many pictures, but did get a couple of Shelby and me pre-game.

WHO DAT?!
