Merry Christmas!

I think Shelby had a wonderful first Christmas. Well, we had a wonderful first Christmas with her, anyway. We left Saturday and drove to Jackson to see Jeremy's dad and step-mom. We had a great dinner with Stephanie's family that night. We got up the next morning and made it to Sacrament meeting. We only stayed through Sacrament though, because we wanted to get back to J's family before we had to leave. We left Sunday and drove down to Hattiesburg and spent Sunday and Monday nights there. Shelby loves being there with everyone. It is so nice that his extended family is all so close. We had a great time with everyone.

We drove back last night, and thanks to lots of leftovers from lunch, had a nice quiet Christmas dinner at home- just J, Shelby, Roxy, and me. Shelby then got to open her presents from Santa.

It was one great Christmas for the Jordan family!

What toys?

Foreshadowing of Christmas morning? Shelby has a whole basket of toys and what does she want to play with? The basket! Shelby amazes me more and more each day as she learns how to do new things. It makes me sad to realize how quickly she has become a big girl, and even though I never thought she was a tiny baby, I realize now she was just this tiny little thing that needed me so much. As she gains more and more independence it makes me yearn for that sweet little bundle to hold again. I start thinking about #2...but then Shelby starts whining because she is teething, and I quickly am brought back to reality and realize I couldn't handle that right now. Not with everything else that is going on. I often look at all the moms at church and always feel so inadequate. I don't know how they do it. All of them with these kids so close in age, and their husbands, being doctors, are gone so much. And yet they seem so perfect- everything always in order- and I always seem rushed and disorganized. Once I am no longer working, hopefully I can be like them. For now I just have to deal with the guilt and settle for doing the best I can do with the situation. Anyway, here's some pics of Shelby sitting up and playing. Jeremy will be especially proud to see that she loves to play with the TMNT.

Jabber-Jaw

Shelby has become quite the little jabber-jaw. For a while now, she has been saying "Maaaaaaa" in her rantings, but I never counted it as her first word because I could tell it was purely accidental (and I didn't really want to be called "Ma"). Yesterday, however, on the way home, Shelby was in her carseat looking out the window, and all of a sudden she let out a clear and distinct "Mama". I was so shocked and excited I almost pulled the car over right then. When I got home, I texted Jeremy (since he was in training) to tell him. I could tell he was a little bummed that a) her first word was "Mama", and b) he wasn't here to hear it. But she didn't leave him disappointed too long. Last night, as I was changing Shelby's diaper, she all of a sudden says, "Dada". I just looked at her in amazement. She hadn't even uttered one "d" sound until then. So I quickly called Jeremy, and he was able to hear her say "Dada". It was great.

5 months old today!

What a big girl.

Quick Note Before I Forget...

I keep forgetting to post Thanksgiving pictures. We had a good visit with Jeremy's family in Hattiesburg, and got to see his dad in Jackson on Friday. I think she had a good first Thanksgiving. She even took a really long nap after dinner. I guess she was practicing for years to come when she eats too much turkey!

Curiousity and the Cold

I love the look Shelby gets on her face when she investigates new things. It is so cute.

I didn't think I would even need to get Shelby a hat, seeing as how it really doesn't get too cold here. But I forget that what might not be cold to me, might be freezing to Shelby. So I had to go get her a little hat when it got below 60 degrees.

Catchin' Up

The past two weeks are a blur. I guess it is good that the days are going by quickly with Jeremy gone, but it seems sometimes I don't even have time to breathe! Just a few random updates:

Shelby had another doctor's appointment last Thursday. She weighed 19 lbs! But she is also 25.5" tall, so she is not a complete butterball- though she does sport some mighty cute rolls! Anyway, Shelby did not even cry when she got her shots. SHE LAUGHED! She was such a good girl. I think she hated the Tylenol more than the shots.

Also this past week, I was excited when I saw that Shelby's birth certificate came in the mail. Until I opened it. Do you think that the state of Louisiana could spend $50 to replace the 1987 printer? Look at this thing! It seriously looks like they printed it off the printer my dad owned in the 80s. And they couldn't even line up the type on the lines. It is so ghetto. I know it's not important, but it is annoying.

Today was our Thanksgiving potluck at work. I brought two turkeys. One actual, real turkey (my first time cooking a turkey!), and this one:

Veruca Salt

Shelby couldn't just play with ONE toy. She had to have one for each hand. She figured out that she could put her arm through the ring from the duck and have that hand free to play with the keys.

Children's Museum

Today we went to the Children's Museum. I know Shelby won't remember it, but she'll have pictures of it and know that we took her there and spent time with her.

It's King Friday from Mr. Rogers!

When all else fails...

...use your feet! Shelby was getting so frustrated because she couldn't reach the yellow birdie. So she decided to use her feet. I thought it was cute.

Tummy Time

A rare picture of Shelby actually happy while on her tummy. She HATES tummy time. She lasts about 30 seconds tops before she gets really frustrated. She is just really content to be held, and doesn't have much of a desire to roll over yet. Of course, I'm sure once she does start rolling over, I'll fondly look back at the days of immobility and wish we could reverse time.

Trunk or Treat!

Shelby's first Trunk or Treat. As you can see from the second picture, she didn't last too long!

Happy Halloween, Daddy!

I am sure that when I was little I must have at some point carved a pumpkin. But in all honesty, I don't remember it. If I ever did, I'm sure my parents did most of the work. So this was the first pumpkin I have ever carved on my own. Pretty obvious I'm a novice. I even forgot to buy the pumpkin carving tools, so I had to carve it using a steak knife! But it was fun. Shelby liked looking at it (I'm sure if she could talk she would say, "Gee, Mom, even I could do a better job!"). Anyway, this pumpkin's for you, Daddy!

Lil' Flirt

Shelby is already a little flirt. Whenever Jeremy would meet his friends for lunch, she would just stare up at them and smile. Yesterday, I was cleaning up and put her in her exersaucer. I looked up to find her in awe of Chef Curtis from Take Home Chef. I guess Grandpa Jordan (Daddypaw) better go ahead and clean that shotgun!

Addiction

I have an addiction. It's no secret I have a sweet tooth. First it was Starburst Jelly Beans. Then there was the infamous TCBY obsession of 2005 (It's bad when you have to set aside money in your budget!). And who can forget the Sour Patch Kids? Well, now I have a new love. Blue Bell ice cream. It started at Alicia's birthday with the Anniversary Cake ice cream. Then I found Almond Pistachio. Then Pecan Pralines N' Cream. And now it's Southern Blackberry Cobbler. It is so good. I can literally eat a half gallon a day. My dream (as of this moment) is to move to Brenham, TX and become a taste tester. Mmmmmm....

A Day of "Firsts"

Today was a day of firsts. For example, this morning Shelby played in her new "Bounce, Bounce Baby" toy for the first time. It was also Shelby's first time wearing this outfit: Shelby also had a sad first today...her first real boo-boo. I was holding her, rushing around to get to church on time. I spun around to head out the door, and at that instant, Shelby flung her head back and whacked her head on the door frame. You can't tell from the blurry picture, but she has a big red line on her poor little head now.

Saying Goodbye

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Saying goodbye is never fun. Yesterday, Jeremy went up to Dallas. He starts his new job tomorrow. So that leaves me and Shelby here by ourselves to sell the house. We are hoping someone will show interest soon. It was very difficult to say goodbye. I know that Jeremy is sad about leaving Shelby and possibly missing important milestones. We are going to try to see each other every weekend, but it will be hard. We love and miss you, Daddy!

16 Weeks

As my sister was telling me the other day about her painful contractions she was having, I said, "I don't even know what those feel like!". She said, "You didn't feel ANY contractions when you had Shelby?". As I got to thinking about it, I realized I did. I had probably 6 or 7 really strong contractions before the nurse gave me some medicine that knocked me out. It's funny how I completely forgot about that.

Anyway, that also got me thinking how it has now been 16 weeks (!) since I had Shelby, and I have not even written down the story of her birth. So here goes.

I was so ready, anxious, excited, etc. to have Shelby. I had everything ready- nursery painted, curtains and bedding made, clothes washed and hung. All that was missing was a baby. I walked, and walked, and walked everyday. I did jumping jacks. I did the bun and thigh rocker. I skipped down the hallway. Yet when I arrived at my appointment on June 21, I was only 1 cm dilated. I was so disappointed. Now, Shelby was not even due until July 1, but I couldn't wait any longer! I begged Dr. Truitt to do something. So, she left the room for a minute, and came back and said, "OK, you are going to have your baby on the 28th!". Since she was already worried I was going to have to have a C-section because the baby was measuring big, and I apparently have a small pelvis, she thought it would be fine to go ahead and induce me. Of course, I was still hoping to go into labor before then. Jeremy was hoping I would, too, because he said he always envisioned my water breaking in the middle of the night and us rushing to the hospital in a panic like you see in the movies. He thought that looked fun.

But no, I did not go into labor on my own. That was the LONGEST week of my life. Finally, the 27th came. I went to the hospital that morning to get some blood work done and to do all the pre-admit paperwork. I went home, cleaned, and unpacked and re-packed our bags. We were ready. We got to the hospital at 8 pm on the dot. The nurses brought me to my "suite" and got me hooked up to the monitors. Then it was the dreaded IV.

At 9 pm the nurse gave me the first round of Cytotec. She said, "Oh don't worry, most women don't even begin to have contractions until the second or third dose". After about 10 minutes they started coming. At first I thought I could handle it. They weren't so bad. But then they got stronger. And longer. After about 30 minutes the nurse came to check on me and she said I could have the epidural if I wanted. I didn't want to go that far just yet, so she just gave me some pain medicine. Whatever it was, it knocked me out! I remember waking up at one point in the night because the monitor was broken and it kept beeping for no reason. I was trying to call Jeremy (who was sleeping on the couch) to tell him to get the nurse, but it was as if my voice was gone. Finally I was able to speak and move somewhat, and after screaming Jeremy's name for 5 minutes he woke up. I don't remember the nurse coming in during the night to give me the 2nd dose of Cytotec, but she did.

Dr. Truitt came in to check on me at 6 am the next morning. I was dilated to about 3 or 4 cm. She said she was going to go ahead and break my water. I asked her if I had peed on myself and she laughed. I was serious. Then the anesthesiologist came in and gave me the epidural. I thought I was going to be nervous and scared, but one of the nurse said, "Just hunch over and lean your head on my stomach". I was so tired that I just fell asleep in that position while the epidural went in, and I didn't feel a thing.

Jeremy's mom came to visit at about 1 pm. When the nurse came in to check me, she went out in the hallway. The nurse checked, and said, "Ok, you're 10 cm. We're going to get you ready to push!". I was so shocked. They had be sit up in bed and "labor down" for about an hour". At about 2:30 they put the stirrups up and told me what I was going to do.

At this point, I have to note that the very thought of labor had absolutely terrified me. Every child birth movie shows this woman screaming her head off in pain. What else are you supposed to be but petrified? Well, the time was here. There was no turning back.

The nurses were so AWESOME. I loved them. They put me at such ease during the whole pushing process. At one point I had to tell them to stop making me laugh because I couldn't push. And then, the next thing I knew, they were telling me to look down. She was coming. One last push and Shelby Lane Jordan was born at 3:36 pm (3 minutes before Jordan's predicted time! ), weighing in at 8 lbs 3 oz, and 20 inches long. They put her on my chest and the first thing I said was, "Why isn't she crying?!". She soon calmed my fears, though, and belted out some screams that were heard throughout the hospital (well, they were heard a few rooms over anyway).

I stared at her in amazement. I didn't know what to do. I wanted to laugh and cry at the same time. After so long she was finally here. Jeremy and I have been married 7 years, and for so long it has been just us (and Roxy), and in this one instant that had all changed.

It has been both the longest and the shortest 16 weeks of my life. I love my Shelby Lane more than anything. Each day is better and better. I could not think of a better post to start off my blog than to share the story of my greatest gift.
